There is more than one path to instructor

Not every dive professional takes the exact same route. Some candidates prefer to move step by step, starting with Assistant Instructor and then continuing into OWSI. Others go straight from Divemaster into the full Instructor Development Course. Both paths lead to becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

After becoming an instructor, you can continue expanding your teaching range and professional profile through Specialty Instructor ratings, MSDT Prep, and eventually IDC Staff Instructor.

Choose Your Path

Some divers want to build confidence step by step. Others are ready to go straight into the full IDC. Here is how the routes compare.

Pathway Option One
Divemaster → Assistant Instructor → OWSI → Instructor

This is a great route for candidates who want to break the process into more manageable stages, build confidence gradually, and develop teaching skills one phase at a time.

  • Best for: candidates who want structure and progression
  • Pace: staged and confidence building
  • Advantage: more time to absorb standards, teaching flow, and feedback
Pathway Option Two
Divemaster → IDC → Instructor

This is the most direct and most common path. The full IDC combines Assistant Instructor and OWSI into one instructor development experience for candidates ready to go all in.

  • Best for: candidates ready for the full commitment
  • Pace: immersive and efficient
  • Advantage: direct route from Divemaster to Instructor

Common Questions

A few quick answers for divers deciding which route makes the most sense.

Should I do Assistant Instructor first or go straight into the IDC?

If you want to build confidence gradually and prefer a staged approach, Assistant Instructor first can be a great fit. If you are ready to commit to the full instructor development process, the IDC is the most direct route.

Can I still do OWSI if I start with Assistant Instructor?

Yes. Assistant Instructor is the first part of the IDC. After that, you can continue into the OWSI portion and work toward becoming a PADI Instructor.

When should I do MSDT Prep?

Usually soon after becoming an instructor, while your momentum is high and the standards, teaching flow, and confidence are still fresh.

Do Specialty Instructor ratings matter?

Absolutely. They expand what you can teach, help you build a stronger resume, and make you more versatile and valuable as a professional.
