AWARE Fish ID Course
Fish Identification Specialty
Ever wondered what kind of fish you’re seeing on a dive? This course helps you move beyond pointing at “that yellow one” and start actually understanding the amazing marine life around you.
The PADI AWARE Fish Identification Specialty teaches you how to recognize and identify the fish you encounter underwater by families, characteristics, and behavior. You’ll learn how to use common identification tools and better understand the relationships within reef ecosystems.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to log your dives with more confidence, more detail, and a much deeper appreciation for how all of these species fit into the bigger picture of a thriving ocean environment.
Once you start knowing who you’re looking at underwater, every dive becomes more interesting. You notice patterns, relationships, and behaviors you would have completely missed before.
Why This Course Matters
The ocean is full of life, and learning to identify what you’re seeing makes every dive more meaningful.
Instead of simply admiring marine life, you start to actually understand it. You notice patterns, behaviors, and connections between species. The reef stops feeling random and starts making sense.
Whether you’re exploring a coral reef in Thailand or a local wreck in the Caribbean, fish identification adds a whole new layer to the dive. It turns a fun dive into a discovery dive.

Why Take Fish Identification?
This is one of those specialties that makes every single dive better.
Once you start recognizing fish families and noticing key characteristics, you stop seeing “a lot of fish” and start seeing the actual diversity of the reef. That awareness makes you more observant, more engaged, and honestly a better diver.
It also deepens your appreciation for marine ecosystems and strengthens your role as a conservation-minded diver.
What Changes After the Course
The best part of this specialty is that it keeps paying off long after the course is over.
You start noticing the difference between families. You begin seeing repeated patterns in how fish move, feed, and interact. You pay more attention to habitat and behavior. Suddenly the reef feels more alive because you’re actually understanding what you’re looking at.
That shift makes every dive more intentional and a lot more fun.
