Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) Diver

The PADI Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) Diver Specialty Course teaches you how to deploy and use a DSMB safely and effectively — an essential skill for every diver. You’ll learn how to prepare, launch, and manage a DSMB from depth while maintaining buoyancy control and situational awareness.

Using a DSMB signals your position to the surface team, helping boats track your location and ensuring a safe ascent, especially during drift dives or in areas with boat traffic. Through hands-on practice, you’ll gain the confidence to handle your reel or spool smoothly and communicate clearly during your ascent and safety stop.

It’s a simple piece of equipment — but mastering it makes you a safer, more self-reliant diver and an even better dive buddy.
