Take Me To Thailand 🇹🇭

Koh Tao Scuba Diving with Seaira Dives: Whale Shark Luck, Dive Family & an Unforgettable Thailand Adventure 🇹🇭🤿

The fifth official Seaira Dives international group trip is officially in the books — and this one was truly something special.

From warm tropical water and iconic Koh Tao dive sites to meaningful conservation education, deep community connection, milestone certifications, and a little extra ocean magic, Thailand delivered on every level. We were incredibly lucky to encounter two whale sharks on two separate dives, something that is never guaranteed and always unforgettable.

This trip wasn’t about rushing from dive to dive or checking boxes. It was about intentional preparation, education, cultural immersion, and shared adventure — the kind of travel that stays with you long after the gear is rinsed, the bags are unpacked, and the jet lag fades.

As always, a Seaira Dives trip starts long before the first giant stride.

Trip Prep: Building the Crew Before We Ever Landed 📱✈️

One of the things that makes Seaira Dives group travel feel different happens before anyone steps onto a boat.

For this Thailand adventure, I created two group spaces early on:

  • a dedicated Thailand Crew WhatsApp group for logistics, questions, packing support, and travel coordination

  • a private Instagram group for sharing reels, creative ideas, edits, and hype as the trip unfolded

Those two spaces became our foundation. The WhatsApp group kept everyone supported and informed. The Instagram group made it feel like we were telling the story together in real time — not just “posting after.”

This matters so much for solo travelers. By the time we landed in Thailand, people already recognized names, personalities, and travel plans. Day one didn’t feel like strangers meeting. It felt like the crew finally arriving.

This was also my first trip using TripIt to consolidate everyone’s travel details, and it was a huge operational upgrade. With international flights, domestic flights, ferries, and overnights, having itineraries in one place made it easier to track arrivals, anticipate delays, and keep everyone moving through travel days smoothly.

To support all of this, I also created a comprehensive Thailand travel guide, covering:

  • Thai cultural expectations and etiquette

  • weather and diving conditions

  • detailed packing lists

  • currency, customs, and entry requirements

  • step-by-step instructions for getting to Koh Tao

  • ferry logistics and island transfers

  • non-diving activities and rest-day ideas

The goal was simple: reduce stress, increase confidence, and build community early, so once we arrived, everyone could focus on enjoying the experience.

What Makes Seaira Dives Trips Different 💙

I’m often asked what makes Seaira Dives trips unique, and this one explains it perfectly.

It’s not about stacking dives as fast as possible or treating the destination like a checklist. It’s community-first, education-driven travel designed to feel:

  • welcoming (especially for solo travelers)

  • supportive (for divers at different experience levels)

  • intentional (so it feels like a true experience, not just logistics)

Education and conservation are part of the trip naturally — not tacked on. And there’s room for rest, culture, spontaneity, and joy: the stuff that makes a trip memorable beyond the dives.

Why Koh Tao in Late December 🌊🐢

Choosing Koh Tao for late December was very intentional. That time window offers some of the best conditions in the Gulf of Thailand and is ideal for a group with mixed experience levels.

Our real conditions (not brochure conditions):

  • Water: 26–29°C / 79–84°F

  • Visibility: variable, roughly 30 feet to 80 feet depending on site/day

  • Weather: rain on our first day, then calm sunny days that felt like the reward

That variability in visibility is actually part of what makes you a better diver. Some dives invite wide-angle wonder. Others force you to slow down, tighten buoyancy, watch your buddy, and focus on the reef right in front of you — and that’s where the magic critter moments live.

The Journey

We flew into Bangkok, but we were delayed and landed late — so we didn’t get to do anything there this time. We checked in, showered, and went straight into “reset mode” because we had travel ahead of us the next day.

From there, we continued south to Koh Samui for one night. That single night by the beach was exactly what the group needed after long-haul travel — salty air, slower pace, and the feeling that we were finally in Thailand for real.

Then came the ferry to Koh Tao — calm blue water, island views, and that moment when the pace changes and everyone starts saying: “Okay… this is happening.”

Ban’s Dive Resort: Our Home Base on Koh Tao 🤿

We stayed at Ban’s Dive Resort, one of the most well-known dive resorts in the world and the number one certifying dive center globally.

Ban’s is large — but what impressed me most is how organized and efficient the operation is. Multiple dive boats daily meant flexibility in scheduling and sites, which matters a lot for a group itinerary.

Location: right on Sairee Beach, which meant we could walk to cafés, restaurants, massage spots, shops, and beach bars without needing transportation. That convenience made our off-boat time feel easy and relaxed — exactly what you want on a dive-heavy trip.

Shout-Outs to the Ban’s Dive Team 💙

Working with Ban’s was incredible — and the people are the reason.

  • Tip (Manager): truly amazing. Helpful, organized, calm, and made the operation feel seamless from the group side.

  • Beau (Dive Guide): Beau is an absolute powerhouse and officially our whale shark luck. Calm, confident, observant, and incredible in every way. The first whale shark encounter happened on her dives — and we are fully convinced she simply brings them with her.

  • Tibo (Dive Guide): brought the laughs, the energy, and the kind of vibe that makes long dive days feel light and fun.

  • Fantille (Dive Guide): kind, patient, and supportive — the type of guide who helps everyone feel confident and capable without ever making it feel stressful.

  • A special shout-out to Riley, our boat master and an absolute joy to be around. From smooth operations to constant good vibes, you helped set the tone for every dive day and made time on the boat just as memorable as time underwater.

And to the captains, boat crew, instructors, and behind-the-scenes staff: thank you. Dive travel works when the operation is solid — and Ban’s truly delivered.

Diving Koh Tao: Our Dive Sites & What Made Each One Special 🦈🌊

Across all of these, we had visibility swings from 30 feet to 80 feet, rain on day one, calm sunny days after — and two whale sharks that turned the trip into a core memory.

We didn’t make it to Sail Rock on this trip — but Koh Tao absolutely showed off anyway. Here’s where we dove, and why each site stood out:

Chumphon Pinnacle

A Koh Tao classic — big granite formations, depth, and that “anything can happen” feeling. This is the type of site that makes you scan the blue, check your buoyancy, and stay ready because pelagics can appear out of nowhere. This was one of those dives that reminded everyone why Koh Tao has the reputation it has.

Southwest Pinnacle

A fan favorite for a reason. Pinnacle dives have a certain energy: structure, depth, schooling fish, and the sense that you’re diving a landmark. It’s the kind of site that rewards divers who stay aware, maintain position in the water column, and keep their heads on a swivel. This is the dives site where we saw two whale sharks on two different dives!

White Rock (Day Dives + Night Dive)

White Rock is versatile — and it’s one of those sites that can feel completely different depending on time of day and conditions. During the day, it’s an easy site to settle into: reef structure, marine life, and a relaxing pace.

At night, it becomes a whole new world. Our night dive at White Rock was a milestone dive for several people on the trip (Tyler, Sabrina, Hailie, and Joey) — and night diving is one of my favorite ways to build confidence. You learn to trust your training, keep your awareness tight, and experience the reef in an entirely different rhythm.

Red Rock

A site that invites you to slow down. Instead of chasing distance, you let the reef come to you. Great for looking closely, spotting smaller life, and appreciating the textures and colors that you miss when you’re moving too quickly.

Junkyard

One of the most unique experiences — an artificial reef environment that’s fun, different, and surprisingly alive. It’s a reminder that marine ecosystems are resilient, and structure creates opportunity for life.

HTMS Suphairin Wreck

The HTMS Suphairin is one of Koh Tao’s newer dive sites and an awesome, seriously cool wreck dive. It has that unmistakable wreck vibe — solid structure, clean lines, and a sense of exploration you just don’t get on reef dives. Wrecks always bring a little extra excitement to the boat, and the Suphairin adds great variety to a dive week, offering a different style of diving that keeps things fresh and fun.

Twins

Classic Koh Tao diving: comfortable, beautiful, and perfect for skill refinement. Great for divers building ocean confidence — and for divers who just want a relaxed, happy reef dive.

Shark Island

Beautiful reef scenery and that sense of “this is Thailand” underwater. Even when the name doesn’t match what you expect, the site delivers with reef life and a more dynamic feel.

Whale Shark Awareness + The Two Encounters That Made the Week 🦈✨

Our conservation focus for this trip was PADI Whale Shark Awareness, and I’m so glad we leaned into it.

Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish — gentle, curious, and unbelievably powerful in a quiet way. Seeing one underwater has a strange effect: time slows down. People get quiet. Even the most experienced divers come up with that same look like, “Did that just happen?”

Why Whale Shark Awareness mattered on this trip

Spotting a whale shark isn’t the point — understanding what you’re seeing is what turns a moment into something meaningful.

We focused on:

  • basic whale shark biology and why they’re fish (not whales)

  • how they feed (filter feeding) and why their behavior can change around divers

  • what ethical interaction looks like: calm approaches, no crowding, no chasing, no touching

  • why awareness matters even in “lucky” moments: we don’t want the experience to come at the animal’s expense

The emotional reality of the encounters

You can’t plan whale sharks. You can’t schedule them. You can’t promise them. And that’s what makes it hit so hard when it happens.

We had two whale sharks on two different dives, and both times it felt like the ocean dropped a gift in our lap. The crew did exactly what I hope every Seaira Dives group does in that moment: stayed respectful, stayed aware, and let the animal lead the interaction. It wasn’t chaos — it was presence.

And yes — we’re calling it: Beau is the whale shark luck. Our first encounters happened thanks to her and the crew, and we are not letting her travel without us ever again.

And then… the tattoos

As if the encounters weren’t enough, three brave dive buddies got whale shark tattoos to commemorate the week. Which honestly feels exactly right for this crew: when something is meaningful, we don’t just “post it.” We honor it.

Thai Cooking Class with Joy: The Best Topside Memory (And We Highly Recommend) 🍜🌶️

This deserved its own section — because it was that good.

Most of the group did a Thai Cooking Class with Joy, and we highly recommend it. It’s just a short walk from Ban’s, which made it an easy and perfect off-gas activity.

Joy was an incredible instructor — warm, funny, patient, and genuinely talented at teaching in a way that makes everyone feel like they can do it. We learned techniques, ingredients, and the “why” behind Thai flavors — not just a recipe card.

We made:

  • Panang curry

  • spring rolls

  • Pad See Ew

It was one of those experiences where everyone’s laughing, tasting, learning, and bonding — and you look around and realize: this is why we travel like this.

New Year’s Eve on Koh Tao: Beach Dinner → Jungle Dancing → Fireworks 🎆🎉

New Year’s Eve on Koh Tao was exactly what it should be: celebratory, fun, and a little wild in the best way.

We started the night with dinner at Sairee Cottage Restaurant — right by the beach, with that relaxed island energy where everyone’s sun-kissed, happy, and still talking about the week’s dives.

From there, most of us headed to Secret Party for dancing and fireworks. If you’ve never done a jungle-style party on an island after a week of diving, it’s hard to describe — it’s equal parts surreal and perfect. Lights, music, barefoot paths, people laughing, and then fireworks overhead — the kind of night you’ll remember randomly months later and smile.

It wasn’t just “a party.” It was a celebration of:

  • surviving travel days

  • showing up for yourself

  • trying new things

  • earning certifications

  • becoming a stronger diver

  • and doing it all with a crew that feels like community

Our Seaira Dives Crew: The People Who Made the Trip 💙

This trip wouldn’t have been what it was without the people. A special shout-out to the eight U.S. military veterans in our group — thank you for your service and for the leadership, humor, and camaraderie you bring into spaces like this.

Pedro

Pedro has been on all but one Seaira Dives trip, making him one of the longest-standing members of this community. Pedro and I go way back to his very first scuba experience, which makes traveling and diving together especially meaningful. Thailand was full of those moments where you look at someone and think, “We’ve come so far.” Already counting down to Fiji and the Galápagos together.

Becky & Kyle

Becky has been on all but one Seaira Dives trip, and her presence has become a familiar part of these adventures. Both Becky and Kyle are Divemasters and comfortable in the water, bringing a steady, relaxed approach to diving. Becky has a great eye for macro photography, often spotting and capturing the small details that many divers swim right past. Their style is low-key and independent, adding consistency to the dive days and contributing to the overall rhythm of the group underwater.

Joey & Hailie (Becky & Kyle’s kids)

This trip included a major milestone: Joey and Hailie’s first night dive. Watching young divers handle night diving with confidence (and excitement) is such a proud instructor moment. They showed up, listened, stayed aware, and proved that diving as a family isn’t just possible — it’s powerful.

Elsbeth

This was Elsbeth’s first Seaira Dives trip, and she fit right in from the start. Calm, curious, and open — the kind of energy that makes every day better. And she loved Thailand so much that she extended her vacation and went to Krabi afterward — which honestly feels like the most Elsbeth move possible in the best way. Can’t wait to dive with Elsbeth in the Galapagos!

Dawn

From Curaçao to Thailand — welcome back. Dawn’s energy is easy, fun, and grounded. And then she took it to the next level: she spent a full month in Thailand before the start of our adventure, truly living her best life. That’s the kind of “say yes to the adventure” energy we love. Dawn is one of Ciara’s original scuba travel buddies!

Sabrina

This was Sabrina’s first Seaira Dives trip, and she crushed it. Our NYE party was all thanks to her! And of course she’s also the one who brings the spontaneous adventure energy — plus she added on a long layover in Finland on the way home because apparently she’s collecting countries now.

Anita & James

Our beach-loving buddies who brought so much warmth, humor, and easygoing joy to the trip. And this trip came with a huge milestone: James went from beach lover to diver, earning his Open Water Diver certification on this trip. Watching someone step into a brand-new world and realize, “Oh… I can do this,” is one of the best parts of any adventure. Anita is next!

Tyler

This was Tyler’s first Seaira Dives trip — and a big one: his first ocean dives and his first night dive. Leading up to Thailand, Tyler put in serious work: Open Water through Advanced Open Water plus multiple specialties to prepare. Watching him take that training and translate it into calm, capable diving in real ocean conditions (including night diving) was incredibly rewarding.

Sona

This was Sona’s second Seaira Dives trip, and she brought her signature confidence, curiosity, and positive energy. Between dives, she leaned into the best parts of Thailand: Thai massages, tours, and intentional downtime. A perfect reminder that adventure is also about balance — you don’t have to go nonstop to have an incredible trip.

With That…

This Koh Tao scuba diving trip was the perfect blend of preparation, education, culture, adventure, and connection. From whale shark encounters and first ocean dives to cooking together, earning certifications, and dancing into the New Year — this trip captured everything Seaira Dives is about.

Part II of this Thailand blog series is coming next, where I’ll cover all the outside-the-trip details — hotels, restaurants, getting to the island, ferry tips, and our favorite places to eat on Koh Tao — because the little details matter just as much as the dives.

Dive safe, explore passionately, and remember…

Adventure is out there!
